Canvas and Cave is Loxy Thomson's farm on an old sugar plantation at Four Hill, in the north-west of Barbados: part arts retreat, part farm, part place to stay. Cane fields roll down to the west coast on one side, and a jungle gully full of monkeys runs along the other. The suites are in the plantation house, the cottages sit beneath the flamboyant trees, and everyone shares the forty-foot saltwater pool beside the old mill.

Hear the stillness.
Touch the moments. Three suites in a restored plantation house and two stone cottages beside the jungle, on a ten-acre farm seven minutes above Speightstown.
Stone arches, the saltwater pool and the sea beyond.

The pool and the mill
The pool is twenty by forty feet of salt water beside the stone tower of the old sugar mill, with loungers, a covered dining area and a barbecue alongside. The large fire pit nearby is the place for stargazing.
The north side
The gully
On the north side the farm drops into a deep gully of old trees and twisting vines, full of monkeys and birds, with a trail running through it. The two cottages sit at its edge, beneath the flamboyant trees. At night the whistling frogs take over.
Evenings often meant gathering by the pool with other guests—sharing meals, swapping stories from our daily adventures, and learning about lives lived in far-off places. Those conversations and laughs became some of our favourite memories.

From Loxy
Known here in Barbados as Loxy, I'm originally from Canada and living the dream here. At Canvas and Cave we have created a beautiful space for people to learn, grow and share ideas, and we have taken a regenerative approach to the natural environment, from the design of our buildings to the permaculture design we have applied to the landscape. Relax in our pool overlooking the sea, or sign up for an arts workshop, and immerse yourself in a truly unique Bajan experience.
An old sugar plantation in the farming community of Four Hill, St. Peter, now part community art centre, part artists' retreat, part place to stay.
Four Hill
Canvas and Cave is seven minutes from the platinum west coast of Barbados and the shops and restaurants of Speightstown, in the farming community of Four Hill, St. Peter. Rolling fields of sugar cane surround it and a jungle-filled gorge borders it to the north: a rural setting within easy reach of the coast.
Local, by design
From the design of the buildings to the permaculture applied to the landscape, the farm takes a regenerative approach to the natural environment, and it puts the weight on local: local art and craft, and local food.
